District  Leaders  Look  To  the  Future  of  Conservation

The importance of locally-led conservation was emphasized to leaders on Capitol Hill by representatives from the Chippewa SWCD, Supervisor Steve Sunderland, and other across the nation during the National Association of Conservation District’s 2008 Summer Legislative Conference earlier this month in Washingtn D.C.

More than 200 NACD members from almost every state and territory came together for four days of networking, learning, and informational briefings from federal agencies, partners and Congressional staff.  Participants met with lawmakers to discuss conservation policy issues and attended NACD’s 2nd annual Congressional Reception.

Sunderland said that his time in Washington  was well-spent.  Agriculture Secretary Schafer recognized conservation districts as the best vehicle to deliver conservation, and it was nice to be able to share that message with our legislators.

The Conference provided Sunderland an opportunity to interact with key decision-makers and help shape conservation policy for private, working lands.  He met with the Minnesota Congressional delegation to emphasize Farm Bill implementation priorities, appropriation requests and the need for locally-led conservation in Minnesota.

Some of the Conference speakers included USDA Deputy Undersecretary Gary Mast, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer, and NRCS Associate Chief Dana York.
